Peter's future in now more 'secure' thanks to Five Lamps

24th May, 2011

Peter Troy from Stockton had wanted for a number of years to start his own security solutions business, but didn’t know how to turn his dream into a reality.

Peter had worked previously for 15 years with Cleveland Police and has a wealth of experience in design, maintenance and installation for a wide range of electronic security and audio visual systems. Peter has also recently gained a Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree for IT in education and a PCGE in teaching and training adults.

Peter first made contact with Business Link, who referred him to Five Lamps in November 2010. He attended some of Five Lamps enterprise workshops to see what starting a business involves.

Peter said “I found Five Lamps’ enterprise workshops really useful, particularly around issues such as National Insurance and Tax. The enthusiasm and knowledge of Five Lamps’ staff at the enterprise workshops was a deciding factor in embarking on this new and exciting venture”

Peter also met with Simon Coe, Five Lamps’ Business Development Officer. Simon helped Peter to review the progress of his business idea, which culminated in the production of a business plan. The business plan helped Peter to direct his activities and aided him to apply successful for funding. He was supported with £640 grant from Stockton Council and a £500 grant from Five Lamps to purchase essential equipment. Peter also received £500 funding from Working Links for training.

Peter said “Without Simon’s expertise and support it would have been very difficult to contemplate starting my own business, especially in the current financial climate”.

Quad Security Solutions opened for business in April this year. Peter has been busy with installation jobs and renewing service contracts and is working hard to market his company to future customers.

He said “I would encourage anyone who is thinking about starting their own business to contact Five Lamps. Working for myself has given me an improved work-life balance. I hope as my business grows, I am able to take on a local Apprenticeship”
