The Five Lamps Organisation (including Conduit and Conduit Scotland) offer great opportunities for talented people

Chair of Audit & Risk Committee

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our committed Board of Trustees and to be our new Chair of Audit & Risk Committee.

Five Lamps Organisation has made a difference to people’s lives for almost 40 years, and we have exciting plans to continue making a positive impact into the future. Part of our success has been down to excellent governance and being able to spot opportunities as well as plan for and manage risk.

As a locally based charity we are passionate about Teesside and supporting local people with social, financial, economic, and anti-poverty solution. Like other charities we continually face risks and challenges, and we have a track record of dealing with these head on, always evolving and innovating. Our new Chair of Audit & Risk Committee will play a lead role on this; working with the Group Chief Executive and the Board to oversee our risk appetite and management of risks as well as providing a robust challenge to the organisation to maintain and strengthen our resilience.

We didn’t just survive the Covid pandemic. We thrived because we adapted our existing services and delivered new ones. We now:

  •  Deliver more than 3000 hours of domiciliary home care supporting people to remain independent in their own homes and have a recent Good status inspection from the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
  •  Deliver a recognised home from hospital support service for those leaving North Tees hospital and needing support.
  •  Reopened our iconic Youthy Building to provide invaluable youth engagement activities and support including dedicated sessions for young people with physical or learning difficulties.
  •  Provide employment and small business advice supporting people out of long term employment to set up their own business.
  •  Work together with other prominent charities to deliver support and initiatives to tackle the rising number of children in poverty.
  •  Employ more than 130 colleagues.

As a charity we also operate at a National Level providing financial support for families unable to access mainstream credit. Registered with the Financial Conduct Authority, we provide affordable short term loans usually to help people in crisis and to prevent them relying on a high cost, pay day or unregulated lender. Last year we disbursed more than £1.9m to just under 3000 households saving families approximately £720k interest.

The risks are varied but managing them effectively can lead to new opportunities.

This is a brilliant opportunity to give something back and help us continue to thrive. If you share our passion for all things equality, inclusion and community and you have a background in either risk management or audit and / or have experience working in a charity preferably with a finance track record or with a financial qualification, this is a brilliant opportunity to give something back and help us continue to thrive.

A webinar is being held on 13th July 2022 at 12noon to give interested parties an opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the organisation and the role. To register and / or submit any questions, please email HR@fivelamps.org.uk

To express an interest in this voluntary position; please send your CV and a covering letter to LisaPickard@fivelamps.org.uk by 24th July 2022. Interviews will be held on Friday 29th July 2022.

Two problems : One solution

The latest Save the Student  Student Money Survey reveals that’s:

  • 66% of students had a part time job. A big reduction from 74% the previous year.
  • 62% of students said that they’re worried about finding a graduate job after Uni.

Holiday and part time jobs have reduced especially in hospitality and retail making it harder for students to find a job when the cost of living has increased, and the student maintenance loan is going less far. Permanent jobs and opportunities for new graduates seem to be reducing even though it’s an employer’s market.

Five Lamps is a Teesside based employer providing local and national products and services that help tackle social, financial and economic inequalities. We are struggling to recruit into jobs because as a charity we cannot compete financially in what is a competitive employer’s market.

Two problems & one solution.

We are initially creating 3 opportunities for college or University students, to work with us during Summer 2022 and potentially to work fewer and more flexible hours around their 2022/23 academic year  studies.

Specific focus will on those studying financial, business management and marketing related courses or where the student wants in the future to work in the charity or finance sectors or within a business environment.

Ideally the students will live in the region and will work with us in one of 3 key areas:

  • Financial Inclusion supporting customers to access loans & improve their financial health
  • Data analysis, performance, and social impact.
  • Social media, brand & marketing.

Lisa Pickard, Group Chief Executive said ‘We saw two issues that could be resolved by launching this new initiative. By offering these opportunities we hope to give local students the opportunity to gain work place experience that strengthens their CV and future employability prospects whilst enabling them to earn extra money that helps alleviate some of their University money pressures. At the same time, Five Lamps’ reaps the benefits of having new talent and fresh ideas in the workplace supporting us to deliver products and services that changes people’s lives. Its also an efficient way to ensure our permanent colleagues can take much needed breaks without service delivery being adversely affected. It really is a win win.

She also went on to add that ‘we also hope that this summer work will lead to an ongoing relationship with the student, so that they can continue to work with us when they return to university. Working remotely and around their studies we believe will help address many of the findings in the Student Money Survey. It also complements the Save the Student guidance on balancing a job and study at University giving the students a chance to keep earning and strengthening their CV without negatively impacting on their studies and at the same time creates capacity for Five Lamps.
