Two problems : One solution

The latest Save the Student  Student Money Survey reveals that’s:

  • 66% of students had a part time job. A big reduction from 74% the previous year.
  • 62% of students said that they’re worried about finding a graduate job after Uni.

Holiday and part time jobs have reduced especially in hospitality and retail making it harder for students to find a job when the cost of living has increased, and the student maintenance loan is going less far. Permanent jobs and opportunities for new graduates seem to be reducing even though it’s an employer’s market.

Five Lamps is a Teesside based employer providing local and national products and services that help tackle social, financial and economic inequalities. We are struggling to recruit into jobs because as a charity we cannot compete financially in what is a competitive employer’s market.

Two problems & one solution.

We are initially creating 3 opportunities for college or University students, to work with us during Summer 2022 and potentially to work fewer and more flexible hours around their 2022/23 academic year  studies.

Specific focus will on those studying financial, business management and marketing related courses or where the student wants in the future to work in the charity or finance sectors or within a business environment.

Ideally the students will live in the region and will work with us in one of 3 key areas:

  • Financial Inclusion supporting customers to access loans & improve their financial health
  • Data analysis, performance, and social impact.
  • Social media, brand & marketing.

Lisa Pickard, Group Chief Executive said ‘We saw two issues that could be resolved by launching this new initiative. By offering these opportunities we hope to give local students the opportunity to gain work place experience that strengthens their CV and future employability prospects whilst enabling them to earn extra money that helps alleviate some of their University money pressures. At the same time, Five Lamps’ reaps the benefits of having new talent and fresh ideas in the workplace supporting us to deliver products and services that changes people’s lives. Its also an efficient way to ensure our permanent colleagues can take much needed breaks without service delivery being adversely affected. It really is a win win.

She also went on to add that ‘we also hope that this summer work will lead to an ongoing relationship with the student, so that they can continue to work with us when they return to university. Working remotely and around their studies we believe will help address many of the findings in the Student Money Survey. It also complements the Save the Student guidance on balancing a job and study at University giving the students a chance to keep earning and strengthening their CV without negatively impacting on their studies and at the same time creates capacity for Five Lamps.
